The Band

Carl and the Llamas

Welcome To Carl and the Llamas

This site is designed to present the band to the band. A site for the gathering of information by and for the band. We'll explore setlists, genres, pick out songs to learn, display the goals of the band, and present the band itself.

Llamas with Hats - Caaarrrrrllllll, That Kills People!

Open Mic Night

That's right, we're going to try for an Open Mic Night at a place in Longmont. It's from 6pm to 9pm, 20 minute sets, and first come, first served. Meaning we'll have to be there early to sign up to play. I'll be there as early as I can get off of work and be at the place to get a spot in line.

Location:
Bootstrap Brewery
142 Pratt Street
Longmont, Colorado

Rehearsal Space

WE NEED A DRUMMER!

And we've played at the new rehearsal space, Grim Beard Productions. It's a bit small and we're the first band to actually pay to do that. We're testing it out along with a few other venues to find one that suits our style.

We decided to go with a rehearsal space vs the current location (my house) in part because our drummer left and it's been pretty hard to get any of the ones that responded to actually want to come up to Nederland. So we'll see how it works.

Check out our set list. If you want to play with us, get in touch.

Carl and the Llamas

The Band in order of membership:

Sit-ins - Folks who come play once in a while

Bailed - Folks who started out but eventually bailed for personal reasons

The Llamas Goals

The goal for the band is to play in front of a crowd. In order to accomplish that, we need to investigate venues and determine what the path is to that goal. Right now we have a tentative first date of January 2019 to play for a wedding. Another goal is to play in one of the local venues like one of Longmont's concerts; Street Fair and/or Rhythm on the River.

Of course an important goal is to have a good time with friends, learning fun songs and advancing our skills both alone and with the band.

The Llamas Set List

This is the current song setlist. It's not a complete setlist. It's basically the order the songs were added to the setlist and it also pretty much shows where we're strong and where we're still working on it. Top songs are ones we pretty much know, bottom ones are new and still being learned. The goal is to have 60 to 90 minutes of songs ready to play before a crowd. The current setlist is pretty broad. As we progress, we'll shift songs around and steady it out.

And the new set list. This tends to bubble up to the actual ones we've learned.

Potential addins. We're on the path to learning some of these

The First Llamas Concert

We have a gig and need to come up with a concert set list and a plan in how to proceed. I've found an interesting gig prep list and the group has come up with a set list along with a plan.

The Second Llamas Concert

Hey, our second gig! Like last year, it's at our yearly BBQ. We'll probably use the same songs and add in the new ones we've been learning. Mostly it's making sure everyone has a chance to relax between harder songs (drummer mainly :) ).

Gigging with the Llamas

We're now looking at gigging. We've been spending the past 6 months or so really trying to add songs and get a set list up to a reasonable level. Jen's husband works at a bar/eatery called The Roost in Longmont Colorado, and indicates that we might be able to play there. No up front payment by the band and no requirement to have a certain number of people attend. I suspect any payment will be minimal but it'll be fun to give it a try :)

Over the past few months, we've been playing as if we're in front of an audience. Repositioning the band, getting rid of extra stuff that isn't being used, wrapping up the cables to keep footing sane, and starting on time, working out the gaps in the songs if necessary, and generally working on our presence.

We're working on getting an hour's worth of songs. This is the current playlist as laid out by quick discussion. It can change at any moment for any reason or none.

The Llamas Youtube Videos

Here's a chronological list of videos that have been posted to Youtube. The reason there are so many in general is we want to show our progress. From the first strum of the guitar and bang of the drum to a more polished group. It's journey and sometimes we take wrong turns. Some of the songs just aren't working out so while you may see it here, if it's not on the setlist, it was dropped, at least for the moment. We may pick it up at a later date because in reality, we do want to play it. We're just not that good (yet).

Note: The videos are in newest at the top order.

Backing Tracks

With Jonathan leaving, and while we hunt for a replacement drummer, here are backing tracks for the songs that are currently on our set list.

Note that most of these are from Leo Moscatelo. Nice bit of lead in so it's consistent.

Also note, using MP3FY (or add 'fy' to the youtube.com link) converts quite well and CloudConvert converts the mp4 to mp3 for use in Reaper.

Borsalino Brothers

Back in January Jeanne mentioned there was a Band in a Hat event going on in March and I could sign up. The concept is folks sign up on a sheet as someone who plays an instrument. I signed up as a guitarist. Others would sign up as a drummer, singer, bassist, and so on. On January 22nd, the organizer created 3 bands by pulling one from each instrument type. In our case, we got Robert as a vocalist, Blake as a Bassist, Kirk on percussion (Bongos, Tamborine, etc), and Jeff on Drums. Adding me as Guitarist and off we go!.

We each mainly selected a song that we knew or wanted to learn and in general created this set list.

And here's the video of the session.

And here's our band picture.

On the plus side of learning 5 new songs! Jeff has indicated he'd like to continue and play drums with us and Blake might also be interested. We'll see how it goes but having a drummer will be a big help. Welcome Jeff!
